Hunting Safety

(Primrose, ON) Hunting season is fast upon us and there isn’t a day that goes by without officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responding to hunting related calls for service. In many cases, hunters are very cautious and responsible individuals, but there are a few that are giving this sport a bad name and the manner in which they hunt, can only be described as dangerous.

Winter Weather is Just Around the Corner

(Primrose, ON) “Although it is hard to believe, winter weather will soon be making a return to the area and motorists are reminded that now is the time to get yourself and your motor vehicle ready for winter” says Chief Superintendent Brad Blair, Regional Commander of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Central Region.

“By getting your vehicle winter-ready, this can be very simply done with a maintenance check-up. A pre-winter check-up should include a physical inspection and testing of the battery, belts, hoses, radiator, oil, lights, brakes, tires, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers and ignition system by a trained automotive professional. Your fuel tank should always have at least half a tank of gas at all times once the weather turns colder and you need to make sure that you have sufficient windshield washer fluid in the reservoir that is rated at a minimum of -40 Degrees Celsius. It is also very important to keep an extra jug in the vehicle” adds Chief Superintendent Blair.

Did You Know? ...

(Primrose, ON) DO YOU KNOW THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT THE OPP?

Dufferin OPP Detachment has been experienced in past incidents where policing issues have come to our attention through non-traditional ways. We encourage anyone who needs policing services to make use of the 911 system, a call to the non-emergent toll free telephone number, or to the Detachment itself to report public safety/policing matters as they occur. A call to the police in a timely way helps us serve the community with an effective police response, and deal with and through the community to keep our County safe.

Not Wearing Seat Belt a Causal Factor in Three Road Deaths

(Primrose, ON) The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has wrapped up its Fall seat belt campaign and has tallied up its statistics for the annual campaign which ran from September 26 to October 13, 2013.
Sadly, lack of seat belt use was a factor in three people losing their lives in road crashes in OPP jurisdictions during this year’s campaign. According to the OPP, fatalities and injuries in which lack of seat belt use is a factor are among the most preventable of deaths on highways and roads.

Community Column by Don Butt (Oct. 2013)

(Town of Mono, ON) This month we want to talk about something we are calling "driving distractions". This is not just using a cell phone for talking or text but other distractions as well. These consist of things like eating, drinking, dialing a radio station, changing a CD, putting on lipstick (yes, they do!), removing a jacket, or checking a road map and many others. If you are caught talking on a cell phone while driving, you may be ticketed or warned. Using hands free equipment may save you, but are you thinking about safe driving or is all your attention on the conversation? When I first got a cell phone, I tried a  simple hands free setup. I didn’t like it so I adopted a habit of pulling over, making my call and then pulling back on the road. I think this is a good policy for many of the things we do. If you have a passenger, ask them to look after the CD or radio or check the map. You may live longer.

ATV Safety Begins with the Operator

(ORILLIA, ON) – With the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend soon approaching, outdoor enthusiasts will be out enjoying the last official long weekend of the year. The public can expect to see an increased police presence within the OPP Central Region to ensure that this takes place.

Check List for closing the Cottage

(Dufferin County, ON)- OPP are reminding residents that It’s autumn and the time has arrived for all property owners to start considering the closure and winterizing of their cottages.

Cottages and summer homes are most vulnerable to thieves from the week following Thanksgiving to the weeks prior to Victoria Day, especially if the owners are not using them for fall, winter or spring getaways.

Remember, if there is no one living at it or checking it regularly, the cost of owning a cottage or summer property includes the frustration and irritation of repairing damage and replacing stolen property.
