Town of Mono, ON (Don Butt) One thing we should remember, is to keep tires and wheels balanced. My Grandson learned this recently. When he was changing to summer tires, he had one that he thought might be out of balance (it was on the rear of the car). When they installed it they accidently put it on the front. Being out of balance, when he drove, the steering wheel vibrated so badly that he could hardly drive! Lesson learned!!
Another problem he ran into was that on older cars, if there is a plastic cover over the headlights, with age these usually turn yellow, thereby reducing the brightness of the lights. In my experience the only thing to do is replace the plastic. Expensive!!
My grandson is a good driver, having had his own car since he was 16, and only one accident, caused by "Black Ice", which gets many older drivers. I let him drive my Chrysler, with no worries! He was driving his dad’s car when he hit the black ice! Oh,oh !!
Something we should be especially vigilant about is "school kids" this year because many times they have been out of school and may show up anywhere, or are back in school and on the school routes again. It’s been a mixed up year and let’s not have any kids injured as well. Please remember the new law that came out last year I believe, that you must wait at a crossing til all pedestrians reach the other side of an intersection. There is a heavy fine for not doing this.
What ever happened to doing the morning walk-around on your vehicle? We used to teach this all the time but it seems to have fallen by the wayside. You check for low tires, damaged tires, body damage, a low tailpipe and more! Let’s start it again. It can pay off big!
