Community Column by Don Butt (September 2020)

Town of Mono, ON (Don Butt) A few columns ago, we talked about things not to do for Safety, so this time we can talk about things to do for Safety. When buying a car, consider two things that I consider important. ABS brakes are often a lifesaver. My friend at Oakville who runs a famous driving school swears by them. I have actually ridden with him in his ABS car on his test track and it was amazing. The other thing is colour. White or light grey cars are harder for other drivers to see in winter, especially in foul weather. So consider these things when buying a car.

When buying snow tires, buy 4 and not 2, and I will tell you why. Tires with a good grip as snow tires help keep the unpowered wheels from sliding out on turns and quick stops. Now you see!! Always check tire pressure weekly for safe driving. Keep an extra jug of washer fluid in your trunk. There is nothing worse than having a big truck go by and not being able to see through your windshield! It is also wise to carry a car emergency kit, especially on long runs or wintertime .

And finally, keep your car and windows as clean as possible. I know it’s very hard in winter, but make an extra effort, it can pay off big. A dirty car or other vehicle is harder to see for other drivers. When driving, inspect every intersection before you get there. I know there are lights at some intersections, but you must depend on other drivers to be alert and follow the rules. When stopped in traffic, leave escape room in case the driver behind has not left space to avoid a rear ender. Also, avoid driving in another drivers hit zone. If another driver swerved  without looking, would you trade fenders? Check your mirrors every five seconds to see what is occurring behind you. The  root of all evil is tailgating. Keeping up on what is behind you can help avoid trouble later. Happy safe driving!!
