Community Column by Don Butt (October 2018)

Town of Mono, ON (Don Butt) Something old is back. A year ago when our famous sign on airport road was taken down by the County of Dufferin (illegally, as we now know) the subject has been raised again by a committee of concerned residents who say that our sign was making a big difference and they want it back. The wording on the sign was what you need to make people take notice – this is peoples lives we are talking about (60 or 70 the last time I checked).

People who have moved off the road say they would never go back. The County promised at the time that they would replace the sign (with nicer wording) - which will not work as we have a retired Safety Officer on our committee who says pussy-footing will not work in a dangerous area such as this one! It appears to be out of our hands at this point. We will have to wait and see.

Have you ever noticed lately that vehicles coming out of driveways or lanes pause and then pull out right in front of you? I have had to hit the brakes several times to avoid a crash.

Could they not wait a few more seconds ‘til I pass by? It seems to me that a lot of accidents are caused by drivers in a huge hurry! Why? The same can be said for drivers in turn lanes who pull up so far that a driver in the through lane, or turning right, cannot see if cars are coming. My friend Doug Annett at his Driver Training facility in Burlington says "stop before the white line or marked crossing."

And please signal your intentions to other motorists. That lever for your turn signals is not hard to reach!

Safety Tip - Check air pressure  every 2 weeks and don’t forget the spare. (This tip comes to you from Doug Annett of the Skid Control School at Oakville, ON http://www.skidcontrolschool.com)
