Dufferin OPP Offer Theft Prevention Tips

Dufferin County, ON (OPP - Dufferin Detachment) – OPP reminds residents to ensure garages and parked vehicles are secured. These types of crime are not new, and are very often preventable through community engagement; empowering communities to play an active role in crime reduction initiatives.


Here are few tips to follow:

  • Lock all garage doors including interior doors that lead into residence.
  • Install sliding bolt on inside of large garage doors to ensure they are not opened remoting using aftermarket garage door opener switches
  • Install exterior motion sensor lights that light up residence exterior including garage entrance and location of vehicles.
  • Record serial numbers and take photos using cellphone or camera recording and inventory your valuables stored in your garage.
  • Remove wallets/purses,GPS,tablets and laptops from vehicles
  • Keep ownership and insurance cards in wallet or on your person
  • Do not leave cash, coins or credit cards in vehicles as these are often target of thieves
  • Don’t leave bicycles, tools or All-Terrain Vehicles outside but rather lock them up in a shed or garage.

Police are reminding residents to contact the OPP Communications Centre immediately at

to report any suspicious activity or suspicious vehicles in the area. Information such as suspect physical descriptions, suspect vehicles and direction of travel are useful tools for investigators.
